Choosing a sauna
Where to start if you're new to garden saunas.
What should I look for in an outdoor sauna?
Four things: a heater with enough power for the cabin, timber thick enough to hold heat and cope with UK weather, a size that suits your space and how many people will use it, and clear information on power, base and delivery before you buy. Our buying guide goes through each one.
Traditional or infrared: what's the difference?
A traditional sauna heats the air, stones and timber around you, usually to 70 to 100°C, and you pour water on the hot stones for steam. An infrared sauna uses panels to warm you more directly at lower air temperatures, which many people find gentler, and it suits indoor spaces. We sell both: our Solen and Arden outdoor saunas are traditional, and The Orb™ collection from Insignia Wellness is indoor infrared. Choose by the experience you prefer and where the sauna will live.
What size sauna do I need?
Start with how many people will use it most of the time, not just when friends visit. For one or two people, a compact cabin such as Solen Compact is usually enough. For families or bigger groups, Solen Plus seats four to six, or look at our Arden range. If it's going indoors, The Orb™ collection comes in one, two and three-person sizes. Our 2-minute garden check matches your garden against our outdoor saunas.
Is a smaller sauna quicker to heat?
Generally, yes. A smaller cabin has less air and timber to warm, so it usually heats up faster and costs less to run than a larger one.
Electric or wood-fired: which is better?
Both give you traditional heat and steam. Electric is the easier everyday choice: switch on, no smoke, ash or log store. Wood-fired needs a flue, logs and more time, and you'll need to check if you're in a Smoke Control Area. Our current saunas are electric.
What's the difference between the Solen and Arden ranges?
Solen is our range of traditional outdoor saunas, led by the two-person Solen Compact. Arden is our range of larger modular garden saunas, built to order around big glass, with a 10.8kW Harvia Legend heater on Arden Horizon and Arden Panorama. We also sell The Orb™ collection, indoor infrared saunas from Insignia Wellness.
Do you make bespoke saunas?
Yes. Bespoke saunas are designed around your space, the number of people using them and how you want to use them, from size and layout to heater, glazing and finishes. Every project starts with a consultation. How bespoke works.
How do I know if my garden is suitable?
Take our 2-minute garden check. Answer a few questions about space, height, base, power and access, and it tells you which of our saunas fit and what to sort out first.
Do you sell infrared saunas?
Yes. The Orb™ collection is a range of indoor infrared saunas from Insignia Wellness, sold by ZÖLSTICE in partnership with Insignia. There are three sizes: The Orb™ for one person, The Orb™ Plus for two and The Orb™ Max for up to three.
Is a garden sauna worth it?
It depends on how often you'll use it. Having one a few steps from the back door makes it easy to use regularly, and a typical session with Solen Compact's standard 4kW heater costs around £1.30 in electricity. Try our running cost calculator to see what your routine would cost, or book a showroom visit to see the quality up close.
How much room does each person need on the bench?
As a rough guide, allow about 60cm of bench per person sitting upright. For lying down, you'll need a longer bench and a larger cabin. Solen Compact is designed for one or two people.
Barrel, cube or cabin: which shape is best?
Each has its fans. Barrels have a smaller internal volume for their length, while square and cabin designs give more headroom, upright seating and room for bigger glass. Think about how many people will use it, how you like to sit and how it will look in your garden.
Glass front or solid wall: which should I choose?
Glass brings in daylight and garden views and makes a small cabin feel more open. Solid timber gives more privacy and holds heat a little better. Where the sauna faces and how overlooked your garden is usually decide it.
What size heater does a sauna need?
The heater is matched to the cabin's volume, with extra allowance for glass and cold weather. Solen Compact's 2.8m³ cabin comes with a 4kW Harvia heater, with a 6kW upgrade available. Solen Plus has a 9kW Harvia Spirit, which Harvia rates for rooms of 8 to 14m³. Arden Horizon and Arden Panorama use a 10.8kW Harvia Legend, which Harvia rates for rooms of 9 to 18m³.
Can I put a sauna indoors?
Our traditional outdoor saunas are designed to live outside. For indoors, The Orb™ collection from Insignia Wellness is made for spare rooms, home gyms and garages. Talk to us about the space you have in mind.
Can I turn my shed or garden room into a sauna?
Sometimes, but a sauna needs proper insulation, ventilation, heat-safe materials and a heater sized for the space. Talk to us about a bespoke sauna and we'll tell you what's realistic.
What is Solen Plus, and is there a larger Solen?
Solen Plus is our sauna for four to six people: a square cabin with a full-glass front, 40mm spruce walls and a 9kW Harvia Spirit heater, in a 160 × 160cm footprint, from £9,995. It's usually delivered in 6 to 10 weeks, depending on any bespoke requirements. Solen Grande, our largest Solen, is coming soon. Get in touch if you'd like to hear when it's available.
Solen Compact
Our two-person traditional outdoor sauna, in detail.
How many people does Solen Compact fit?
One or two. The cabin measures 200 × 149 × 96cm inside (H × W × D), with an internal volume of 2.8m³ and a raised alder bench.
How big is Solen Compact?
Externally it's 216cm high, 167cm wide and 120cm deep. Allow extra clearance around it for installation and maintenance. The size guide shows it to scale.
Which heater comes with Solen Compact?
A Harvia electric heater with stones for traditional steam: 4kW as standard, or upgrade to 6kW for £100. Choose your heater on the product page.
What is Solen Compact made from?
45mm Thermowood walls, raised alder-wood benching, a tinted tempered glass door and black Katepal roofing.
What is Thermowood?
Timber that's been modified with controlled heat and steam. It absorbs less moisture and stays more stable as outdoor conditions change, which suits a sauna that lives outside.
How heavy is Solen Compact?
Solen Compact weighs 450kg once assembled. It arrives flat-packed at 100 × 117 × 200cm (H × W × D), so plan the route from the kerb and make sure the base can carry the weight plus people.
How is the sauna ventilated?
Solen Compact has dual vents. Fresh air comes in low in the cabin, and warm, moist air leaves near the top.
Can Solen Compact stay outside all year?
Yes. It's built from 45mm Thermowood with black Katepal roofing, designed for regular outdoor use through the seasons when it's correctly installed and maintained.
How much is Solen Compact?
£5,795 with the standard 4kW Harvia heater, or £5,895 with the 6kW upgrade, including VAT. Delivery is extra, or you can collect free from our showroom. See Solen Compact.
Is the glass door strong?
Yes. It's tinted tempered glass, which is heat-treated for strength and designed for sauna use. The tint adds privacy while still letting daylight into the cabin.
What colour is Solen Compact?
Solen Compact pairs dark Thermowood timber with a black front frame, black Katepal roofing and dark hardware, finished with a tinted glass door. It's a contemporary look that sits quietly in most gardens.
Can I lie down in Solen Compact?
The cabin is 149cm wide inside, so it's designed for sitting upright. If you'd like to lie down, look at a larger cabin or talk to us about a bespoke sauna.
Arden and The Orb™
Our modular Arden saunas, and The Orb™ indoor infrared collection from Insignia Wellness.
Which ZÖLSTICE range is right for me?
Solen is our traditional outdoor range, starting with the two-person Solen Compact, our signature sauna. Arden is our larger modular outdoor range, built to order, for groups and gardens where the view matters. The Orb™ collection is indoor infrared from Insignia Wellness, for one to three people. Ask us if you're deciding between them.
What is the Arden range?
Arden is our range of modular outdoor saunas, designed around large glass fronts. Arden Horizon and Arden Panorama come in black or brown, with a 10.8kW Harvia Legend heater in black or silver, and clear or tinted glass. Every Arden is built to order, usually in 6 to 10 weeks.
Are Arden saunas built to order?
Yes. Every Arden sauna is built to order, and usually takes 6 to 10 weeks, depending on the model and the options you choose. We'll confirm timings when you order. Prices shown are for the standard version.
Can I add a salt wall or other upgrades?
Yes. Because Arden saunas are built to order, we can tailor them further, including a backlit salt wall. Call or email us to talk through options and get a price.
What's the difference between clear and tinted glass?
Clear glass comes as standard on Arden Horizon and Arden Panorama. Tinted glass, on every glass panel, is a £395 upgrade, and gives you more privacy if your garden is overlooked.
What electrics does a 10.8kW sauna heater need?
Harvia rates the 10.8kW Legend, fitted to Arden Horizon and Arden Panorama, for a standard UK single-phase supply on its own 50A circuit, or a 400V three-phase supply (3 × 16A). A 50A circuit is a big load for a home, so ask a registered electrician to check your supply has the capacity before you order. The work must be installed and certified to BS 7671.
What is The Orb™?
The Orb™ collection is a range of curved indoor infrared saunas from Insignia Wellness, made in Hemlock with carbon infrared panels, colour lighting and Bluetooth audio. The Orb™ seats one, The Orb™ Plus two and The Orb™ Max up to three.
Who makes The Orb™ saunas?
The Orb™ collection is designed by Insignia Wellness and sold by ZÖLSTICE Wellness in partnership with Insignia. You buy from us, with the same support as any ZÖLSTICE sauna.
Where can I put an Orb™ infrared sauna?
Indoors, in a spare room, home gym or garage, with enough space for its footprint and the door. The Orb™ is 101 × 101cm, The Orb™ Plus 125 × 100cm and The Orb™ Max 139.4 × 100cm, all 195cm high. Ask us about the power supply for your chosen model.
How much does an infrared sauna cost to run?
Very little. The Orb™ collection draws around 1.9 to 2.1kW, so an hour-long session, including 15 minutes to warm up, costs around 61p to 70p at the Ofgem price cap average of 26.32p per kWh (Oct–Dec 2026). That assumes the panels run at full power throughout, so real costs are often lower. Try our running cost calculator.
Do I need an electrician to install The Orb™?
It depends on your home and the model. Ask us before you order and we'll confirm the power supply your chosen Orb™ needs. If a new circuit is required, it must be installed and certified by a registered electrician.
How much is delivery for The Orb™?
£149 to England and Wales, £249 to mainland Scotland and £349 to Northern Ireland. The Scottish islands, Isle of Man and Channel Islands are quoted individually. Use our delivery estimator to check your postcode.
Can I control The Orb™ from my phone?
Yes, on The Orb™ Plus and The Orb™ Max. Both have a smart touchscreen, and with the Wi-Fi upgrade, £39.99 when you order, you can also control the sauna from your phone. The Orb™ has a standard touch control panel with four memory presets, without Wi-Fi control. Compare all three.
How big are The Orb™ saunas?
All three are 195cm high. The Orb™ is 101 × 101cm, The Orb™ Plus 125 × 100cm and The Orb™ Max 139.4 × 100cm (W × D). Allow room for the door to open, and measure the route through your home before delivery.
Space, base and planning
Where it goes, what it sits on and whether you need permission.
How much space do I need for a garden sauna?
The sauna's footprint plus enough room around it to assemble it and reach every side for maintenance. Solen Compact's footprint is 167 × 120cm. Our 2-minute garden check compares your measurements with each sauna.
What base does a garden sauna need?
A firm, flat, load-bearing base, such as a concrete pad, paving slabs on a compacted sub-base, or a suitably built deck. Solen Compact weighs 450kg before you add stones and people. We don't lay bases, but we're happy to advise on which one to use.
Can I put a sauna on decking?
It can work if the deck is built to carry the full weight of the sauna plus people. Have it checked before delivery. If in doubt, a concrete pad or paving slabs are the safer choice.
Can I put a sauna on grass or gravel?
No. Lawn, soil and loose gravel aren't firm or level enough. Lay a concrete pad, paving slabs or a suitably built deck first.
Where is the best place to put a garden sauna?
On a firm, flat, load-bearing base, with space around it for installation and maintenance and a practical route for the electrician's cable. Many people site it near the house for easy winter use, with a bench or outdoor shower close by for cooling down.
Do I need planning permission for a garden sauna?
Often not. In England, a garden sauna usually counts as an outbuilding under permitted development, provided it meets the size, height and siting limits. Solen Compact stands 216cm tall, below the 2.5m limit that applies within 2m of a boundary. Read our planning guide.
What are the permitted development limits for outbuildings?
In England, broadly: not in front of the house, single storey with eaves no higher than 2.5m, no taller than 4m with a dual-pitched roof or 3m otherwise, no more than 2.5m tall within 2m of a boundary, and not covering more than half the land around the house. Our planning guide has the details.
Do I need building regulations approval?
Usually not for the sauna itself. A detached outbuilding under 15m² with no sleeping accommodation doesn't normally need approval. The electrics are different: in England and Wales, a new circuit is normally notifiable, and a registered electrician can self-certify it.
What if I live in a flat, listed building or conservation area?
Permitted development rights for outbuildings apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes, and any outbuilding at a listed building needs permission. Conservation areas and other designated land have extra limits. Check with your council before you order.
Are the rules different in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland?
Yes. Each nation has its own planning rules. They're broadly similar, but the limits aren't identical, so check your local council's guidance before you order.
How far from the house can my sauna be?
As far as you like, but the further it is, the longer the cable run, and your electrician may need to use thicker armoured cable or dig a trench. Many people site it close to the house for easy trips on cold evenings.
How close to my fence or boundary can it go?
For planning in England, anything within 2m of a boundary must be no more than 2.5m tall. Solen Compact is 216cm. Leave enough room around it for installation and maintenance, and follow the installation clearances in the manual.
Can I put my sauna under a tree?
It's best not to. Overhanging branches drop leaves and debris on the roof, keep the timber damp and can cause damage in storms. Choose an open spot where the sauna can dry out after rain.
Does the base need to be perfectly level?
Yes. A flat, level base keeps the walls square and the door closing properly. Check it with a spirit level before delivery day.
How big should the base be?
At least as big as the sauna's footprint. Many people make it a little larger so there's a dry, firm edge to step onto. Solen Compact's footprint is 167 × 120cm.
Can I use ground screws instead of concrete?
Some people do. Whatever you use, it must be designed to carry the full weight of the sauna and people, and give a firm, level surface. Talk to us about your plan before you order.
Do I need a water supply or drainage?
No. A traditional sauna doesn't need plumbing: you use a bucket and ladle for the stones. Make sure rainwater drains away from the base, and add an outdoor shower nearby if you'd like one.
Will my neighbours be bothered?
An electric sauna makes no smoke and very little noise. It's still worth thinking about where it's overlooked, and a friendly word with your neighbours never hurts.
Can I put a sauna on a roof terrace or balcony?
Only if a structural engineer confirms it can carry the full weight of the sauna and people, and you can get the parts up there safely. Talk to us first.
Power and running costs
What it needs to run, and what it costs.
What power supply does Solen Compact need?
A standard UK single-phase (230V) supply, whichever heater you choose. The heater needs its own dedicated circuit, installed and certified by a registered electrician. See what the electrics involve.
What electrics does a 6kW sauna heater need?
A 6kW heater runs on a standard UK single-phase supply. It draws around 26A, so it needs its own dedicated circuit, never a plug or a spur. As a guide, your electrician will typically:
- run a dedicated radial circuit from your consumer unit, usually on a 32A breaker, sized to the heater manufacturer's instructions
- use armoured (SWA) cable for the run to the garden, sized for the load and the distance
- fit a local isolator outside the cabin, and heat-resistant cable where the heater connects inside
- provide RCD protection as BS 7671 and the heater manufacturer require
- check the earthing arrangement for an outdoor building, and that your main fuse has capacity alongside things like an EV charger or electric shower
Saunas are covered by Section 703 of BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In England and Wales, a new circuit is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so use an electrician registered with a competent person scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT. They'll self-certify the work and give you an Electrical Installation Certificate. We don't carry out household electrics, but we're happy to talk your electrician through the heater.
Do I need three-phase power for a sauna?
Usually not. Solen Compact runs on a standard single-phase supply with either heater, which is what most UK homes have. The 10.8kW Harvia Legend on Arden Horizon and Arden Panorama can run on single phase on its own 50A circuit, or on three-phase. Some other larger heaters need three-phase, so always check the electrical details on the product page, and ask your electrician.
What if my home only has a single-phase supply?
That's fine for Solen Compact. Both its 4kW and 6kW heaters run on single phase, which is what most UK homes have. Your electrician will check your main fuse and consumer unit have the capacity for the extra load. Our 2-minute garden check shows which saunas suit your supply.
Can I plug a sauna into a normal socket?
Not an outdoor sauna. A traditional sauna heater draws far more than a 13A socket can supply, so it needs its own dedicated circuit, installed and certified by a registered electrician. Indoor infrared saunas use much less power, around 2kW for The Orb™ collection; ask us and we'll confirm the supply your chosen model needs before you order.
Do I need an electrician?
Yes. The heater must always be connected by a qualified electrician; we don't carry out household electrical work. In England and Wales, a new circuit is normally notifiable under the Building Regulations, which a registered electrician can self-certify.
How much does an outdoor sauna cost to run?
Roughly £1.30 to £3.55 a session, based on a 45-minute warm-up plus an hour's use at the Ofgem price cap average of 26.32p per kWh (Oct–Dec 2026): about £1.30 with a 4kW heater, £2 with 6kW, £3 with the 9kW heater on Solen Plus and £3.55 with the 10.8kW heater on Arden. Try our running cost calculator.
How much does Solen Compact cost to run?
Roughly £1.30 a session with the standard 4kW heater, or about £2 with the 6kW upgrade. That's based on a 45-minute warm-up, then an hour with the heater cycling on and off, at the Ofgem price cap average of 26.32p per kWh (Oct–Dec 2026).
How long does a sauna take to heat up?
An electric sauna typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the heater, the cabin and the weather. Our running cost estimates allow for a 45-minute warm-up.
Is electric or wood-fired cheaper to run?
As a rough guide, electric costs about £1.30 to £3.55 a session depending on the heater, while a wood-fired sauna typically uses £3 to £6 of kiln-dried logs. Your tariff, logs and the weather all make a difference.
How do I know if I have three-phase power?
You don't need it for Solen Compact, which runs on single phase. If you're curious, three-phase homes usually have three main fuses and a larger meter. A qualified electrician can tell you for certain, and check you have enough spare capacity.
Can I upgrade to three-phase power?
Often, yes, but you usually won't need to for a home sauna: Solen Compact runs on single phase with either heater. If a larger heater ever calls for three-phase, it's arranged through your local electricity network operator and can take time and cost money, so ask your electrician early.
How much does an electrician charge to wire in a sauna?
It depends on the distance from your consumer unit, whether cable needs burying and what upgrades your supply needs. Get quotes from qualified electricians once you know where the sauna will go.
Can I run my sauna on solar panels?
Solar can cover some of your use when the sun's out, but the sauna still needs a correctly rated supply from the mains. Ask your electrician how it would work with your system.
Can I save money with an off-peak tariff?
If your tariff has cheaper hours, heating the sauna during them lowers the cost of each session. Plug your own rate into our running cost calculator.
Does the heater stay on the whole time?
No. It runs flat out while warming up, then switches on and off to hold the temperature you set. Our running cost estimates allow for this.

How does the sauna arrive?
Solen Compact arrives flat-packed, measuring 100 × 117 × 200cm (H × W × D) and weighing 450kg, so check the route from the kerb to where it will stand. The Orb™ saunas are delivered to your door, so measure doorways, stairs and corners inside your home. Arden delivery and installation are planned with you for your address.
Will it fit through my side gate?
Measure the narrowest point on the route: gates, side passages and corners. Solen Compact's flat-pack is 117cm wide and 100cm high. Our 2-minute garden check flags tight access, and if it looks tight, talk to us before you order.
Can you install it for me?
Yes. Our installation covers building the sauna and getting it into position. The base and electrics aren't included: you'll need a finished base, and a qualified electrician to connect the heater, either before we arrive or on the same day so we can work with them to sign the unit off.
What does installation include?
We build the sauna and put it in position. Installation doesn't include the base or the electrics: we don't lay bases, though we're happy to advise on one, and a qualified electrician must connect the heater, either before we arrive or on the same day so we can work with them to sign the unit off.
How much does installation cost?
For outdoor saunas, use our delivery estimator: a standard price by sauna size (from £500 for small saunas), plus £1.60 per mile from our Northamptonshire HQ. We confirm your final price before anything is booked. Arden installation is quoted individually.
Can I assemble the sauna myself?
Yes, with at least two people. Or ask us about professional installation, where we build the sauna and put it in position for you. Either way, the heater must be connected by a qualified electrician.
What happens after I order?
You'll get a confirmation email, then we'll be in touch to talk through siting, your base, power and delivery or collection. See every step.
How long does delivery take?
Arden saunas are built to order and usually take 6 to 10 weeks, depending on the model and options. Solen Plus is usually delivered in 6 to 10 weeks, depending on any bespoke requirements. For Solen Compact and The Orb™, we confirm your delivery date when we contact you after your order, and we'll always agree a day that suits you.
Is the delivery estimate my final quote?
It's a guide based on your postcode. Send it to us from the estimator and we'll confirm your final price before anything is booked. For Solen Compact and The Orb™, delivery is also calculated at checkout.
How do I prepare for delivery day?
Have the base finished and level, clear the route from the road to the base, and measure every gate, path and corner along the way. If we're installing, book your electrician for before or on the same day. Someone should be home to meet the delivery.
Do I need to be at home for delivery?
Yes, please plan for someone to be there. We'll agree the delivery with you when we get in touch after you order.
How many people does it take to assemble?
At least two people. The flat-pack weighs 450kg in total, so the heavier parts need more than one pair of hands. Or ask us about professional installation.
How long does assembly take?
It depends on the sauna and how handy you are. If you'd rather not do it yourself, ask us about professional installation, quoted individually for your location.
Does installation include the base?
No, we don't lay bases. We're happy to give you guidance on the right base to use, and it must be finished and level before installation day.
Does installation include connecting the electrics?
No. We never touch household electrics. A qualified electrician must make the connection, either before installation day or on the day itself, so we can work with them to sign the unit off.
What if my sauna arrives damaged?
Take photos of the packaging and any damage, and contact us straight away, before assembling anything. We'll arrange a repair or replacement. Your statutory rights are not affected.
Can I change my delivery date or address?
Yes. Contact us as soon as possible with the new date or address and we'll do our best to rearrange it. The more notice you can give, the easier it is.
Do you deliver outside mainland Britain and Northern Ireland?
Our standard delivery rates cover England, Wales, mainland Scotland and Northern Ireland. Delivery to the Scottish islands is available on request and quoted individually. For anywhere else, contact us.
Can I order now and have it delivered later?
Often, yes. Get in touch before you order with the timing you have in mind, for example while a base is being laid or building work finishes, and we'll confirm what we can do.
Using and caring for your sauna
Getting the most from every session.
How hot should a sauna be?
A traditional sauna typically runs at 70 to 100°C. For your first sessions, start towards the lower end, around 70 to 90°C.
How long should I stay in the sauna?
Around 8 to 15 minutes per round, then cool down and rest before going back in. Most people do two or three rounds. Leave whenever you've had enough.
How do I use a sauna for the first time?
Heat it to around 70 to 90°C, sit in for 8 to 15 minutes, cool down with fresh air or a cool shower, rest for 10 to 15 minutes, then repeat for two or three rounds. Drink water before and after. Read our full guide.
What is löyly?
It's the Finnish word for the burst of steam when you pour water on the hot stones. Use a sauna bucket and ladle, pour a little at a time, and you control how intense the heat feels.
How do I cool down between sauna rounds?
Step outside into the fresh air, sit somewhere quiet or take a cool shower, then rest for a few minutes before you go back in. Drink plenty of water.
What should I do before a sauna session?
Drink some water, take a quick shower, skip the big meal and never drink alcohol before a sauna. Take a towel to sit on.
Is sauna safe for everyone?
Sauna isn't right for everyone. If you're pregnant, have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, or any other medical concern, speak to your GP first. Don't use a sauna if you feel unwell, and supervise children closely.
How do I look after my sauna?
Leave the door ajar after each session so the cabin dries out, use a towel every time, wipe the benches now and then, and follow the heater manufacturer's guidance on the stones.
How often can I use my sauna?
There's no set rule: use it whenever you enjoy it, and listen to your body. If you're keeping an eye on costs, our running cost calculator shows what different routines cost each month.
What should I wear in a sauna?
At home, it's up to you: swimwear, a towel or nothing at all. Take off jewellery and watches, as metal gets hot, and always sit on a towel.
Can I take my phone into the sauna?
It's best not to. Sauna temperatures are well above what phones are designed to handle. Leave it outside and enjoy the break.
Can I use essential oils or aromas?
Use sauna aromas made for the purpose, a few drops mixed into the water in your bucket. Never pour neat oils onto the stones or heater, and check the heater manual first.
Can children use a sauna?
Only with close adult supervision, at a lower temperature and for much shorter sessions. If you're unsure, ask your GP.
How often should I change the sauna stones?
Harvia recommends replacing the stones about once a year if you use the sauna around twice a week, and restacking them in between, as they crumble over time and restrict airflow.
Should I heat the sauna empty the first time?
Yes. It's normal for a new heater to give off a smell the first time it heats up, so run it empty first with the door open, and follow the heater manual.
Why does my sauna smell?
A new heater can smell during its first heat-ups. After that, smells usually mean it needs airing and cleaning: leave the door open after use, wipe the benches and always sit on a towel.
What water should I put on the stones?
Clean tap water. Avoid seawater, pool water or anything with chlorine, as it can damage the stones and heater.
How much water should I throw on the stones?
Start with a small ladle at a time and wait for the steam to settle before adding more. You'll quickly find the level you enjoy.
How do I clean the benches?
Wipe them with warm water and a mild soap, let them dry with the door open, and lightly sand any marks. Don't varnish or paint the inside of a sauna.
Should I treat the outside timber?
Thermowood weathers to a soft silver-grey in sunlight. If you'd like to keep its colour, an exterior wood oil can help. Ask us what we recommend.
Should I shower after a sauna?
Many people like a cool rinse after the last round, and a quick shower beforehand keeps the benches clean. It's up to you.
Living with a garden sauna
Weather, upkeep, insurance and the practical bits.
Can I use my sauna in winter?
Yes. Many people enjoy it most on cold, dark evenings. Warm-up can take a little longer in freezing weather.
Will my sauna get damp or mould?
Not if it's looked after. Leave the door ajar after every session so the cabin dries, keep it on a firm base off the ground and clear leaves and debris from around it.
How long will a garden sauna last?
That depends on how well it's sited and cared for. A firm, well-drained base, regular airing and a check of the roof and timber each year all help it last.
Do I need to tell my home insurer?
It's a good idea. Tell your insurer you've added an outbuilding with an electric sauna, and keep your electrician's certificate for the connection.
Will a sauna add value to my home?
We can't promise it will. Some buyers see a garden sauna as a real feature, but it depends on the buyer and the property.
Can I take my sauna with me if I move?
Talk to us about your model. You'll need an electrician to disconnect it and reconnect it at your new home, and a base ready at the other end.
Is an electric sauna noisy?
Hardly at all. You may hear the controls click as the heater switches on and off.
How do I keep my sauna safe when I'm not using it?
Switch the heater off after every session, and make sure children can't use it without an adult.
What should I check after a storm?
Look over the roof, clear any branches or debris and make sure water is draining away from the base. Brush off heavy snow from the roof.
Warranty, showroom and ordering
Buying with confidence.
What warranty do your saunas come with?
Saunas in our Solen range come with a 2-year warranty on the wood and a 1-year warranty on the electricals, on registration. The Orb™ infrared saunas carry Insignia Wellness's warranty: 3 years on the wood and 2 years on the electricals. For Arden, ask us and we'll confirm the cover for your model.
Where is your showroom?
Ash Tree Farm, Stoke Albany Road, Northamptonshire, NN14 2SP. It's open by appointment only.
Can I see a sauna before I buy?
Yes, by appointment at our Northamptonshire showroom. Many of our saunas are built to order or tailored to each customer, so the models on display change from time to time. Book a visit, tell us which sauna you'd like to see, and we'll confirm what's on display before you travel.
Do your prices include VAT?
Yes. Our prices include VAT. Delivery is added at checkout, or collection is free.
Is checkout secure?
Yes. You pay through Shopify's secure checkout, which encrypts your payment details. We never see or store your full card number.
Who is ZÖLSTICE?

We're based in Northamptonshire and work in partnership with Royal Tubs, and we also sell The Orb™ infrared saunas in partnership with Insignia Wellness. Read our story.
Are your saunas tested?
Yes. Every sauna in our collection is carefully chosen and tested by us before we offer it. If it doesn't meet our standard, we don't sell it.

Email hello@zolsticewellness.com or use our contact form. We're happy to help with choosing a sauna, siting, power, delivery and installation, or to book a showroom visit.
Can I cancel my order?
Yes. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, you can normally cancel an online order within 14 days of delivery. Bespoke saunas made to your specification are exempt. Contact us to cancel or if you have any questions.
How do I register my warranty?
The warranty applies once you register your sauna. We'll explain how when your sauna arrives. If you haven't heard from us, get in touch.
Is my sauna in stock?
Arden saunas are built to order, and Solen Plus is usually delivered in 6 to 10 weeks, depending on any bespoke requirements. For Solen Compact and The Orb™, contact us for current availability and we'll confirm timings before you order.
